General Product Care and Maintenance

Do you help me move my existing furniture?

Our delivery teams cannot move, handle, or rearrange existing furniture inside your home. This policy is in place for safety and liability reasons. However, we will always work to safely place your new furniture in the designated area. Ashley also does not provide moving service from one address to another.

What the Delivery Team Can Do

  • Place your new furniture in the room of your choice
  • Move items to the curb upon request (if needed)
  • Remove an old mattress or foundation if a haul-away service was purchased (one-for-one basis)

What the Delivery Team Cannot Do

  • Move or rearrange existing furniture in your home
  • Disconnect or move electronics (TVs, computers, audio equipment, etc.)
  • Remove items beyond approved haul-away services
  • Remove mattresses that are soiled, stained, or infested (for safety reasons)

How to Prepare for Delivery

To help ensure a smooth and efficient delivery:

  • Clear pathways from entry points to the delivery area
  • Remove existing furniture, rugs, or décor blocking the space
  • Make sure the delivery area is completely open and ready for placement
  • Disconnect and relocate any electronics ahead of time

Helpful Reminder: Preparing your space in advance helps the delivery team complete your delivery safely and efficiently without delays.

Rotating cushions

Rotating and maintaining your sofa cushions regularly helps prevent uneven wear, sagging, and permanent "dents" in frequently used seating areas. It also helps your cushions stay comfortable and last longer.

Recommended Rotation Schedule

  • Best practice: Weekly rotation for heavily used sofas
  • Standard care: Once a month
  • Minimum: Every 3–6 months

How to Rotate Cushions

1. Swap positions

Move left cushions to the right side and right cushions to the left.

2. Flip cushions (if reversible)

Turn cushions over to use the opposite side.

3. Internal rotation (non-reversible cushions)

If your cushions are not reversible or have fixed covers:

  • Unzip the cover
  • Remove the foam insert
  • Rotate the insert so the back becomes the front
  • Place it back and re-zip

Extra Cushion Care Tips

  • Fluff regularly: Pat and press cushions to restore shape and airflow
  • Back pillows: Lightly "chop" or massage to redistribute filling
  • Chaise cushions: Gently compress or reposition since they usually can't be flipped
  • Vacuum weekly: Use a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris from seams

Helpful Reminder: Regular rotation and fluffing are the best ways to prevent early sagging and keep your sofa looking and feeling its best. Normal softening of cushions over time is expected with regular use and is not considered a defect.

What can I put in the washer/dryer?

Most Ashley furniture and accessories are not designed for machine washing or drying. However, select performance fabrics and specific product lines are made to be removable and washable. Always check the care tag for the Universal Cleaning Code (such as "WASH" or "MW") before laundering.

Items That Are Typically Machine Washable

Performance Fabric Furniture (select collections):

Certain Ashley performance fabrics (like Next-Gen Nuvella™) have removable cushion or pillow covers that can be machine washed.

Washable Rugs:

Select Ashley rug collections (e.g., washable rug lines) are designed for standard home washing machines.

Bedding:

Most cotton and synthetic sheets, pillowcases, and bedding items are machine washable.

General Washing Guidelines

  • Performance fabric covers: Cold water, gentle cycle, zip closed. Air dry only (prevents shrinkage).
  • Washable rugs: Cold water, no bleach, gentle cycle. Air dry flat or hang dry.
  • Bedding: Cold water, gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low heat.

Items You Should NOT Machine Wash

  • Standard sofa or sectional covers (most W, S, WS, or X coded fabrics)
  • Leather furniture or leather components
  • Natural fiber or wool rugs
  • Any non-removable upholstery covers

Machine washing non-approved items can cause shrinkage, damage, or void warranty coverage.

Helpful Reminder: When in doubt, always check the furniture tag or care guide before washing. If the item is not explicitly labeled as washable, it should be spot cleaned only.

What can I put in the washer/dryer?

Rotating your mattress helps ensure even wear, improves comfort, and can extend the life of your mattress. Most modern Ashley mattresses are designed to be rotated — not flipped — since comfort layers are built into the top side only.

Recommended Rotation Schedule

  • First Year (New Mattress): Rotate every few weeks to monthly to help materials settle evenly
  • Memory Foam: Every 6–12 months
  • Hybrid & Pillow-Top: Every 3–6 months
  • Innerspring: Every 6–12 months
  • Latex: Every 6–12 months or as needed (often less frequently due to durability)

How to Rotate Your Mattress

  • Remove all bedding and clear space around the bed
  • Rotate the mattress 180° (head becomes foot)
  • Use two people, when possible, as mattresses can be heavy
  • Avoid using side handles for lifting — they are only for positioning

Why Rotation Matters

  • Promotes even wear and reduces body impressions
  • Helps prevent sagging and lumps
  • Supports long-term comfort and durability
  • May help maintain warranty care requirements

Helpful Reminder: Regular rotation is one of the simplest ways to keep your mattress feeling comfortable and performing its best for years.

Cleaning wood

Proper care will help protect your wood furniture, maintain its finish, and keep it looking beautiful for years to come. This includes both routine maintenance and simple spot-cleaning tips.

Routine Care

To keep your wood furniture in great condition:

  • Dust weekly using a soft, lint-free cloth
  • Keep furniture away from heat vents, air conditioning, and direct sunlight to prevent fading or drying
  • Use felt pads under lamps and décor to prevent scratches
  • Rotate decorative items occasionally to avoid uneven wear
  • Use placemats, coasters, and hot pads to protect surfaces
  • Avoid placing newspapers or magazines directly on wood surfaces, as ink may transfer
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals

Minor Scratch Repair

  • Use furniture touch-up crayons or markers (available at most hardware stores)
  • Match the color as closely as possible to blend scratches into the finish

Spot Cleaning Tips

Spills or food stains:

Wipe immediately with a soft, clean cloth. Lightly polish afterward if needed.

Cloudy finish:

Mix 1 tablespoon vinegar with 1 quart of water. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Dry completely, then apply a non-wax furniture polish.

Water rings:

Gently rub a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and cooking oil in the direction of the grain.

Wax or gum:

Harden with ice, then gently scrape off. Clean residue with a soft cloth and furniture polish.

Helpful Reminder: Always clean gently and avoid harsh products to protect the finish and extend the life of your furniture.

Checking your center support legs for a bed

Flooring type and surface movement can affect the stability of your furniture over time. Without proper support, shifting or sliding may cause stress on the frame and cause damage.

Why This Matters

  • Movement or sliding can cause loose or broken rails, especially on beds
  • Center support legs need proper friction and stability to stay in place
  • Hard or slick flooring can increase unwanted shifting

How to Help Prevent Damage

To improve stability and protect your furniture:

  • Use anti-skid pads under legs or support points
  • Place an area rug under the furniture to reduce movement
  • Regularly check that center legs are firmly touching the floor

Helpful Reminder: Adding friction and stability helps prevent unnecessary stress on your furniture and can extend its lifespan.

Installing skid pads (dining tables, chairs, sofas)

The installation process depends on the type of skid pads you are using (adhesive, nail-in, or cup-style). Proper installation helps protect your floors and keep furniture stable.

Step 1: Clean the Surface

Before applying skid pads:

  • Wipe the bottom of each furniture leg with a damp cloth or mineral spirits
  • Remove all dust, dirt, and oils
  • Allow the surface to fully dry

Step 2: Apply Skid Pads (Adhesive Type)

If you are using adhesive skid pads:

  • Peel off the backing
  • Center the pad on the furniture leg
  • Press firmly for several seconds to ensure a strong hold

Important Notes

  • Do not apply adhesive pads directly to leather or upholstered surfaces
  • Only attach skid pads to the wooden or plastic feet at the bottom of the furniture
  • This helps prevent permanent damage and ensures proper performance

Cushions are sliding

Cushion sliding is usually considered normal wear or a comfort preference and is generally not covered under Ashley's Limited Warranty, which focuses on material or manufacturing defects.

However, if the sliding is caused by seam slippage or a failed internal attachment (like a broken Velcro strip), it may be covered if reported within the first year of purchase.

Ways to Keep Cushions in Place

If your cushions aren't covered by a plan, here are some effective DIY solutions:

  • Non-Slip Rug Pads: Cut a piece of rubberized anti-slip rug padding to fit the sofa base. Place it under the cushions for friction without adhesives.
  • Heavy-Duty Velcro: Attach adhesive Velcro strips to the bottom of the cushions and the sofa frame for a strong, semi-permanent hold.
  • Double-Sided Carpet Tape: Provides a very secure grip, especially on fabric sofas. Apply to the underside of cushions.
  • Shelf Liners: A budget-friendly alternative to rug pads. Rubber shelf liners add friction but may need occasional replacement.

These simple methods can help your cushions stay in place and improve your comfort.

Pilling

Fabric pilling is a common and normal occurrence with upholstered furniture. It is not considered a defect and does not impact the durability, quality, or function of the fabric. Pilling happens when small loose fibers rise to the surface and form tiny "balls" due to regular use.

How to Remove Pilling

Pilling can be easily treated using a fabric shaver or defuzzer, which gently removes loose fibers from the surface. These tools are affordable and typically cost between $10–$50.

With regular use of a fabric shaver, pilling usually improves significantly after 3–4 treatments.

Additional Support Options

In some cases, we may be able to offer a one-time courtesy service appointment for a technician to help remove pilling using professional equipment.

Helpful Reminder: Pilling is a natural part of fabric wear and does not affect the lifespan or performance of your furniture. Regular maintenance can help keep your fabric looking its best.

Cleaning leather

Leather is a natural material, and part of its beauty is that no two pieces are exactly alike. Variations in color, grain, and natural markings such as wrinkles, small scratches, or healed scars are normal and are not considered defects. These characteristics are part of what makes genuine leather unique and do not affect durability or performance.

General Leather Care

To keep your leather looking its best:

  • Dust regularly and use a vacuum crevice tool for seams and creases
  • Wipe weekly with a clean, damp, soft cloth or sponge (do not rub)
  • Keep leather out of direct sunlight to prevent fading or drying
  • Keep furniture at least 2 feet away from heat sources
  • Avoid placing newspapers or magazines on leather to prevent ink transfer
  • Avoid sharp objects, which can scratch or damage the surface
  • Do not use harsh cleaners, oils, soaps, detergents, or abrasive chemicals
  • Only use cleaners specifically designed for leather, and always test in a hidden area first
  • Improper cleaning methods may void your warranty

Leather conditioners may be used to help protect and extend the life of your furniture when used according to instructions.

How to Clean Common Stains

Water Spots:

Wipe the entire section (seam to seam) with a damp cloth, so the area dries evenly and no watermark remains.

Pet Urine:

Use an enzyme-based cleaner such as Nature's Miracle and follow the product instructions. Always clean the full section (seam to seam) to avoid uneven drying marks.

Ink Stains:

Ink remover sticks may help reduce or remove visible ink marks on most leathers.

Oil or Food Grease:

Apply corn starch to the stain and gently rub with your fingers. The friction helps lift the oil. Let it sit, then vacuum or brush away. Repeat if needed.

Ring Marks / Water Demarcation:

Use a lightly damp sponge with room-temperature water and gently wipe from the spot outward, reducing moisture as you move away from the stain. Do not scrub — only wipe gently.

Important Reminder: Leather is durable, but it is not damage-proof. Proper care and gentle cleaning will help maintain its appearance and extend its lifespan.

Furniture Odor

It's common for new furniture to have mild odors, especially when made with materials like foam, adhesives, paints, or surface finishes. These odors usually dissipate as the furniture "airs out." Here's how to manage and reduce any smell:

Helpful Tips for Reducing Odors:

  • Open windows and ensure the room is well-ventilated.
  • Use fans or air purifiers to improve air circulation.
  • Apply odor-neutralizing products such as Febreze or dryer sheets.
  • Use natural odor absorbers like baking soda or a bowl of hot water with lemon slices.

Expected Timeline:

Allow at least 3 days and up to 2 weeks for odors to dissipate.

Next Steps if Odor Persists:

If the smell continues after two weeks, contact us for further assistance.

Common Sources of Furniture Odors:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Emitted from foam, adhesives, paints, or finishes. VOCs may include formaldehyde, toluene, and acetone derivatives. Odors can be stronger if items were wrapped in plastic.
  • Fire Retardants & Stain-Resistant Treatments: Chemicals used in upholstery may smell like cleaning agents or solvents.
  • Adhesives & Glues: Solvent-based adhesives in upholstery, foam, or wood joints may release noticeable odors as they cure.
  • Packaging & Shipping: Extended storage in sealed containers or hot conditions can intensify odors.

Safety Standards:

Ashley furniture complies with CARB and EPA TSCA Title VI regulations, which limit VOC emissions and reduce potential health risks.

Following these steps should help neutralize odors and ensure your furniture is fresh and ready for use.

Storing and caring for outdoor furniture

Outdoor furniture is designed to withstand the elements, but proper care is essential to maintain its appearance and longevity. Here are the best practices and important considerations:

General Care:

  • Protect your furniture from harsh weather such as rain, snow, and extreme heat. Using protective covers (available in our showrooms) is highly recommended, especially during the off-season.
  • Exposure to constant moisture can cause bubbles, red spots, chipping, or splintering, which may void the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Metal components may rust if not properly maintained.

Outdoor Cushions & Sectionals:

  • Remove seat cushions when furniture is not in use.
  • Cushions and throw pillows are stored under the unit upon delivery.
  • Soiled fabric cushions can be cleaned following manufacturer recommendations, such as using Greased Lightning.
  • Serial numbers are required for part orders and can usually be found under the unit or on the metal frame.
  • Cushions are not covered under warranty unless they are missing at delivery or show a fabric defect.
  • To purchase additional cushions, contact your local showroom.

Fire Pits & Tables:

  • Patio sets with fire pits or propane tables include a propane tank, but drivers and technicians cannot install or connect propane lines due to safety regulations. Customers must use a licensed professional.
  • These units are not designed for cooking (e.g., roasting marshmallows or hot dogs).
  • Technicians will replace parts if needed but will not set up stones, rocks, or gems included with the unit.

Umbrellas:

  • Two styles are available: regular umbrella with a stand, and stand-up umbrella with a sand-filled base (sand must be added by the guest).
  • Always store umbrellas closed to prevent wind damage. Improper storage may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Optional Protection:

Guests may purchase a 3-year protection plan for additional coverage against accidents or damage.

Proper care ensures your outdoor furniture stays in great condition for years to come.

Do you offer cleaning service/how do I clean it myself?

Ashley does not provide on-demand, standalone cleaning services for general maintenance. However, there are options for both professional cleaning and self-care:

1. Professional Cleaning via Protection Plans

If you purchased a 5-Year Premium Merchandise Protection Plan (often through Life Happens), you may be eligible for in-home professional cleaning under certain conditions:

  • Accidental Stains: Covers accidental stains from food, drinks, or biological fluids.
  • Technician Dispatch: If customer service cannot resolve the issue remotely, a professional furniture craftsman may be sent to clean your item at home.
  • Replacement Guarantee: If the technician cannot remove the stain or repair the damage, the item may be replaced.
  • Reporting Timeline: Accidents typically need to be reported within 30 days to qualify for coverage.

2. Cleaning Your Furniture Yourself

Ashley provides a Care and Cleaning Guide with recommendations based on the Universal Cleaning Codes found on your furniture's tag:

  • W: Clean with water-based shampoo or foam.
  • S: Use dry cleaning solvents only; do not use water.
  • WS: Spot clean with either water-based or solvent-based cleaners.
  • X: Vacuum or lightly brush only; do not use any liquid cleaners.

3. External Professional Options

If you don't have a protection plan and need a deep clean, you can hire third-party specialists such as Stanley Steemer or Oxi Fresh, who are experienced in upholstery and mattress cleaning.

This approach ensures your furniture stays in top condition while following the safest cleaning methods.
